What counts as a PostgreSQL emergency

Not every database problem requires emergency response, but the following scenarios are genuine emergencies that justify same-day intervention rather than waiting for a scheduled session:

Connection exhaustion

RDS is refusing new connections. Application errors show FATAL: remaining connection slots are reserved. Users cannot log in. Every minute costs revenue.

Lock contention cascade

A long-running transaction is blocking all writes. Table lock queues are growing. The application is functionally read-only and a deployment or migration is stuck.

Transaction ID wraparound

PostgreSQL has issued a WARNING: database is not accepting commands to avoid wraparound or autovacuum has not run on a critical table in days. Immediate vacuum intervention required.

Runaway query / OOM

A query is consuming all available memory or CPU, causing the RDS instance to become unresponsive. Other queries are timing out. The query cannot be safely killed without understanding its transaction state.

Post-upgrade regression

Query performance collapsed after upgrading to RDS PostgreSQL 16.9. Key queries that took milliseconds now take seconds. Users are impacted and the team cannot identify the cause.

Replication lag crisis

RDS read replica lag has grown to minutes or hours. Reads from replicas are returning stale data. WAL sender processes are consuming excessive I/O on the primary.

What happens during a PostgreSQL emergency session

Every emergency session follows the same structured incident response process:

T+0
ON BOOKING CONFIRMATION

Access granted & triage begins

You share the read-only IAM role. We connect immediately to pg_stat_activity, pg_locks, and pg_stat_statements to get a live picture of the incident state.

T+20
WITHIN 20 MINUTES

Root cause identified

We identify the primary cause of the incident: the blocking query, the saturated connection pool, the vacuum backlog, or the memory-consuming sort operation. We confirm the diagnosis with you before taking any action.

T+45
WITHIN 45 MINUTES

Immediate stabilisation

With your explicit approval at each step, we apply the minimum changes required to stabilise the instance: terminating blocking sessions, clearing lock queues, emergency vacuum runs, connection pool reconfiguration.

T+2h
BY END OF SESSION

Incident summary delivered

You receive a written incident summary covering: root cause, actions taken, timeline, and preventative measures to stop the same incident occurring again. All changes are documented for your audit trail.
